Brunel’s Sketchbook

Brunel\'s Sketchbook

Bristol is celebrating the life and work of Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 2006 with a series of events, festivals and exhibitions. I was commissioned by Brunel 200 to produce a short film for the 90 Second Challenge website.

After researching Brunel’s life and work I decided to focus in on where his ideas began, as pen and ink sketches. Brunel’s drawings, full of energy like the man himself, are wonderful illustrations of thoughts in their infancy. A few lines on paper will one day become the Clifton Suspension Bridge or the Great Eastern.

Yet few local people are aware that the Brunel collection - his sketchbooks, diaries and letters - are archived in The University of Bristol. By presenting them in an animated way, I hope to bring them to a wider audience in a new context.
